Norway Rat
Brown Rat, Sewer Rat (Rattus norvegicus)
One of the most common rats in California is the Norway rat. These rodents are also known as brown rats or sewer rats, and they can be found in both urban and rural areas. Norway rats live in burrows that they create themselves, but they can also live in sewers, basements, and other dark, damp places. They can be confused with roof rats, but Norway rats are large, with adults reaching 18 inches in length. They have brown fur and long tails, and their ears are small compared to their bodies.
