Scorpions That Can Be Found in Central California
Worry not, fellow Central Californians, while there are a few scorpions in the central state, they are very uncommon. Not only are you unlikely to run into one, but the ones that we have don’t tend to be harmful.
Below are some of they types of scorpions that we could see in our part of the state.
Types of Scorpions In Central California
California Common Scorpion
(Paruroctonus silvestrii)
California common scorpion is the most well-known species in North America. It is light brown and has a maximum length of about three inches. This scorpion’s sting is not lethal to humans but can still be painful.
Sawfinger Scorpion
(Serradigitus gertschi)
The saw finger scorpion is the most deadly scorpion in the world. It dwells in various habitats, including deserts, forests, and even urban areas. It is best to avoid this animal at all costs, as its venom is incredibly potent and can cause death within minutes.
Monterey Dunes Scorpion
(Paruroctonus maritimus)
The Monterey Dunes Scorpion is a little-known creature found in the deserts of California. This small, but deadly scorpion, has a nasty sting that can cause excruciating pain and even death. Although they are not as common as other California desert creatures, such as rattlesnakes and coyotes, it is crucial to be aware of their presence and take precautions if hiking or camping in these areas.

The California Swollenstinger Scorpion is a giant, black scorpion with a long, curved tail. It can grow up to eight inches in length and is one of the most venomous scorpions in North America.
